By Rachel Acosta

Leonardo del Vecchio entered the world on May 22, 1935, in Milan, Italy, and rose to prominence as the founder and leader of Luxottica. Recognized by Forbes in 2015 as Italy’s wealthiest citizen and the 40th richest globally, his fortune surpassed $20 billion.

Leonardo Del Vecchio's Net Worth: A Multi-Billion Dollar Legacy

Forbes estimated Leonardo’s wealth at over twenty billion dollars in 2015, largely attributed to his strategic development of Luxottica into a global powerhouse.

His early years were marked by hardship; his father passed before his birth, leading to his placement in an orphanage at age seven. By fourteen, he began an apprenticeship as a toolmaker, honing skills that would later fuel his success in crafting eyewear and sunglasses.

At twenty-five, he established Luxottica in 1961, beginning a remarkable journey that saw the company grow exponentially. By 1967, he introduced contract sales for full eyewear solutions, expanding independently in the early 1970s.

Recognizing the importance of vertical integration, Leonardo expanded Luxottica’s reach by acquiring distributors like Scarrone in 1974. International growth commenced in 1981 with a German subsidiary, followed by landmark collaborations such as the 1988 deal with Giorgio Armani.

The company’s public listing on the NYSE in 1990 catalyzed further expansion, culminating in listings on the Milan Stock Exchange in 2000 and inclusion in major indices by 2003. These milestones paved the way for acquisitions, starting with Vogue Eyewear in 1990.

Today, Luxottica stands as the planet’s foremost producer and retailer of eyewear, operating iconic brands like Sunglass Hut, LensCrafters, Ray-Ban, and Oakley across more than 6,000 retail outlets worldwide. With 75,000 employees, the firm crafts eyewear for top luxury labels including Burberry, Chanel, and Versace, ensuring Leonardo’s legacy endures.

Beyond Luxottica, Leonardo holds investments in major corporations such as Assicurazioni Generali, Fonciere delle Romagne, and UniCredit Bank.

On a personal note, Leonardo maintained a private life with three children from his first marriage, one from his second, and two from his current spouse. His approach to wealth remains grounded, focusing on innovation and long-term vision.
