Ken Schrader entered the world of competitive racing in 1971, securing victories at Lake Hill Speedway in Valley Park prior to advancing to sprint cars. His breakthrough came in 1980 when he claimed the USAC Stock Car Division Rookie of the Year award, followed by a third-place overall finish the subsequent year. Throughout his USAC career, he accumulated impressive wins across multiple categories, including four sprint car victories, twenty-one midget races, six Silver Crown events, and additional midget competitions.

Transitioning to NASCAR in 1984, Schrader made an immediate impact by finishing 19th at the inaugural Nashville race. By 1986, he achieved four top-ten finishes and secured 16th in the championship standings.
