Gabriela Sabatini: Tennis Star Turned Billionaire?

By Mia Phillips

Gabriela Beatriz Sabatini entered the world of competitive tennis at an early age, claiming her first tournament victory at just eight years old. Her initial foray into professional sports saw her achieve remarkable milestones, including securing the Orange Bowl title at thirteen and attaining the World No. 1 junior ranking by 1984, backed by six significant international junior victories. Transitioning to senior-level competition, Sabatini reached the French Open semifinals in 1985 and turned pro the same year, capturing her inaugural tournament win in Tokyo later that period.

Her Grand Slam journey began in earnest in 1988 when she competed in her inaugural singles final at the US Open, facing Steffi Graf in a three-set battle. Despite the loss, her performance garnered national attention, leading to her selection for Argentina's 1988 Olympic team where she earned a silver medal, again narrowly losing to Graf. The same year marked a turning point as Sabatini triumphed over Graf in both the US Open final and the WTA Tour Championships, significantly boosting her earnings. Throughout the early 1990s, she continued to excel, capturing five titles in 1991 before experiencing a dip in form, notably succumbing to Graf at the 1992 US Open. Improvements came in 1993 with a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open, though she fell short against Mary Jo Fernandez at Roland Garros. By 1995, she secured a notable victory over Lindsay Davenport in Sydney but soon retired from singles competition. She concluded her career with mixed results, including wins against Martina Hingis and Fernandez at the US Open, before finally hanging up her rackets in 1996. Over her career, she amassed 27 singles and 14 doubles titles, earning the Diamond Konex Award for Argentina's top athlete in 2001.
